History IAIN Sheik Nurjati Cirebon can not be separated from the history of the struggle of Indonesian Muslims especially those in Cirebon. Socio-political situation of the Indonesian nation in the early 1960s which was characterized by the development of communist ideology (PKI), has encouraged Muslims to become the institution as one of the terrain of their struggle. In connection, the presence of Islamic Higher Education into the demands of objectivity because of the many graduates of Islamic schools, like the madrassas and pesantren high school level who wish to continue their studies and the encouragement to prepare for a dive bureaucratic power, many filled by the result of colonial education that is not possible to carry asoirasi Muslims.
Based on the spirit to print a Muslim scholar warrior, then in the early 1960s Muslim activists belonging to the Islamic Forum Study Club (ISC) Cirebon founded the institute of Higher Islamic education which is then given the name of Sharif Hidayatullah Islamic University (UNISHA) under the guidance of Islamic Higher Education Foundation Sharif Hidayatullah.
On 12 August 1965, one of three faculty in UNISHA environment, namely the Faculty of Religion at negrikan and inaugurated a Faculty Tarbiyah Jami'ah al-Sharif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Cirebon Branch. Meanwhile, other faculty and the Faculty of Law Faculty of Economics, became a branch of the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) in Yogyakarta. On this basis, August 12, 1965 in made the day so
IAIN Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon.
In the next development
IAIN Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon had opened the Faculty Ushuludin which was inaugurated in 1967. However, due to the existence of the rationalization of government policy, then in 1974 the Faculty was closed again. Then, in line with that policy as well, on March 15, 1976 Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon fostering transferred to Mount Djati IAIN Bandung, until finally switched status to become a State Islamic College (STAIN) Cirebon in 1997, in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 11/1997 dated March 21, 1997.
Although over the status of the Faculty of Mount Djati Tarbiyah IAIN Bandung Cirebon Branch, occurred on March 21, 1997, the day of birth STAIN Cirebon on Date August 12, 1965, the date of opening of the Faculty Tarbiyah of IAIN Sharif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Cirebon Branch.
And finally STAIN Cirebon renamed
IAIN Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon after bagging permit Presidential Regulation No. 48 of 2009 issued on November 10, 2009 and change of name was inaugurated by Minister of Religious Affairs on page Suryadharma Ali
IAIN Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon campus.
